A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR...

The day Covid-19 shut down in-person learning in schools is the day the Shalom, Inc. Staff pro-actively started to  develop virtual lessons using the PowerPoint platform and later interjected other platforms as this became the new  normal. The schools welcomed the virtual lessons. The students reported their appreciation for our presence and our creative engagement with them. These were unchartered waters for everyone involved. It required extended work hours, multiple planning sessions, and a generous and dedicated staff. We accomplished the task and prepared ourselves for the Hybrid learning model. On a moment’s notice the Staff shifts from in-person to virtual lessons. Challenges abound due to technological capability, readiness, and quarantine interruptions which accounts for shifts in numbers reached.

SHAlom team member speaks out:

I have always believed that once a student is confident in who they are they can achieve at  higher levels. I witnessed this happen through the interactions with the math enrichment students and Ms. Davis's social-emotional exercises which took place at Little Flower High School for Girls during the 2020-2021 school year.  This unique partnership has allowed our students to soar to heights that they never imagined they could reach. As the year progressed, Ms. Davis and I noticed how the girls started asserting themselves more with active participation in the virtual and physical classroom. During a recent assessment that measures growth, more than 53% of our students went up one or more grade levels, and tardiness and absenteeism decreased. This is very positive; especially during this very challenging year. All of these positive changes were a result of infusing evidence-based prevention social-emotional learning strategies daily into the math class.
